“Creativity takes courage.” Henri Matisse
The tangram is a Chinese puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put together to form shapes. The objective of the puzzle is to form a specific shape using all seven pieces, which may not overlap. Students will be creating their very own tangram books incorporating printmaking and stamp design.

Students will bring home a syllabus they need signed on Day ONE. We use sketchbooks daily and students will need one Monday January 8th. I will also send home an order form for sketchbooks. You may order from the art department or get one from any store. Looking forward to starting 3rd quarter!!!

Their FUNCTIONAL ART project is in the kiln and students will paint them next week. Next week look forward to bringing home portfolios and clay projects unless part of the STEAM show in January Students are creating a piece for the PTSA Reflections competition.
This years theme is "Within Reach." Due: Friday 17th at the end of class with 100 word artist statement Objectives: Why Reflections? So students can....
How will you create a 2D artwork that does not exceed 24x30” and depicts the theme: “Within Reach,” using your knowledge of the art elements and principles of design? Students are creating mixed media portraits inspired by Gustav Klimt's "Baby Cradle" artwork. Students will be able to draw a face in PROPORTION. Students will be able to show UNITY in their work. VOCAB: MIXED MEDIA= using more than one medium to create your piece (crayon, marker, and yarn)
Week one:
Students are participating in getting to know you activities as well as designing their portfolio. Students will need a sketchbook by Monday October 16th. Students are visiting each of the connections classrooms and meeting all the connections teachers for the first two weeks.
When students come into the art classroom, they will create a collaborative portrait with their peers! Students are creating observational drawings outside this week. Students are trying to capture the nature that surrounds Durham Middle School. This activity was inspired by Canadian artist, Emily Carr.
Students are collaborating with their peers at Lost Mountain Middle School on a poetry unit.
Students began this week with introductions. Students from Durham created and wrote a post card to their partner at Lost Mountain and will be awaiting their response. Next, students are working on a 2D piece that depicts an Adversity that they have faced in their life. Students will be giving their artwork to their partner at Lost Mt. to interpret and write a poem based on the visual. Looking a head, students will be invited to an Art/LA night at Lost Mt. Middle to celebrate their success and so students can meet in person! Gustav Klimt Inspired Portraits Objective: To introduce students to Gustav Klimt’s style of portraiture and show students how to use the elements of art to create an artwork similar to Klimt’s To learn about a new artist and his style of work as well as show another way to incorporate elements of art into the composition Essential Questions: What is the difference between a self-portrait and a portrait? What are the identifying characteristics that make up Klimt’s style of art? What is the mixed media technique and how will you incorporate it into your piece? Performance Task: Students will create a 2D mixed media piece that shows they understand the style and characteristics of Gustav Klimt's artwork, specifically the piece titled "Baby Cradle."
